Great Free Activity for Family Reunion Groups Sugarlands Visitor Center Sugarlands Visitor Center is open year round. It is located inside the Park, two miles south of Gatlinburg on US 441. Guided programs are conducted seasonally. Please check at the visitor center and/or the web site for times and locations of these programs. The visitor center features free admission to a 20-minute film with Dolby Digital Surround Sound and extensive natural history exhibits. Available facilities include the Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association bookstore and shop, public restrooms and telephones, soda and water machines, and a back country permit station.

Winterfest Trolley Ride of Lights - Gatlinburg Winterfest has been recognized as a Top Twenty Event in the South by the Southeast Tourism Society several times and twice by the American Bus Association as a Top 100 Event in North America! The best way to view the more than 35 lighting displays and numerous other lights featured in Gatlinburg's Winterfest is to hop aboard the Winterfest Trolley Ride of Lights and take a leisurely ride through the city. Trolleys depart from the Gatlinburg Aquarium Welcome Center at Traffic Light No. 5 (Mass Transit Center) at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 p.m. nightly from November through December. Small fee, some December dates excluded.

Gatlinburg MountainFest - All new event! A summer celebration of Gatlinburg's heritage and continues throughout August with numerous activities and an Independence Day grand celebration. MountainFest begins with two days of genuine Appalachian music, bluegrass, crafts & craftsmen, demonstrations from local talent, and homemade southern foods presented by Gatlinburg restaurants.

Annual Midnight Independence Parade - Gatlinburg will kick off America's Independence Day celebration with the nation's first parade, which will lead off at midnight to the cheers of 70,000 to 100,000 spectators. As soon as the street is closed, the parade route comes alive with pre-parade entertainers that begin the excitement of what is to follow, such as giant helium balloons soaring through the skyline of downtown Gatlinburg.

River Regatta and 4th of July Fireworks - Beginning at the Christus Gardens bridge on River Road and ending at the Aquarium bridge in downtown Gatlinburg. This unmanned river raft race is open to all and anything floatable except balls and plastic eggs. In the past, families have entered boats made out of matchsticks, floating rocks, as well as little rubber ducks. Registration takes place between 11 a.m. and noon, with the race beginning promptly at noon. Support for the River Raft Regatta is provided by the Gatlinburg Recreation Center. Great reunion group activity!
